The Staff of the Dell Rapids Tribune
For 120 years we have read about the happenings in
and around the Dell Rapids community through the gathering of
information from the North, East, West and South (NEWS) in a format
called a weekly newspaper. This newspaper is called the Dell Rapids
Tribune and it has been the life story of many known and unknown
reporters. It's beginnings are not well known but it's history is rich
and revered by most as the best little paper around.
While visiting with it's editor and general
manager, Suzie Bullion, I discovered many interesting items which we may
not remember. I found that W.W. Sanders was the editor 75 years
ago and a yearly subscription was about $2.00. Since then many have
owned and operated the Tribune. Some of the better known were Virgil and
Norma Smith from the 70's to 80's, then Chuck Cecil purchased it from
Wayne Wieseler, and Jim Wilber from Chuck. Recently in 2002
the Tribune was purchased by Gannett Corporation and has remained so.
There have been many editors and reporters along the way; too many to
mention here.
The current staff includes Carolyn Lamberty, Jesse
Christian, Neal Castle and Suzie Bullion. They work days, nights and
weekends to discover and report the events of our community to us in the
form of pictures and words on paper as well as their web site. Copy is
collected and assembled on computers these days and processed all the
way through to the presses without the assistance of layout tables, glue
or paper. The dark room is a thing of the past as pictures are taken
digitally and integrated into the computer generated articles.
Suzy Bullion manages 5 of the Gannett papers in
Dell Rapids, Baltic, Garretson, Brandon Valley and Tea/Harrisburg. With
a great team of people working side by side respective papers are
compiled, checked, edited and compiled each week for a fresh new look at
each community. Such a grand undertaking requires the cooperation
and personal dedication of all involved.
I asked Suzie what advice she might give to new
business owners and she replied, "Everyone should have a mentor to help
steer them in the right direction. Know your technology and don't be
afraid to ask questions." She mentioned that she owes many thanks
to Randy Nielson (English Teacher) for developing her interest in the
English language.
This writer has spent some time in the newspaper
business as many others have, and would like to say I have a deep
appreciation for all persons involved at the Tribune. Thanks for the
memories!
