Holland House Pastries is the Dell Rapids Chamber of Commerce Business of the Month for June 2005 . Roger and Keri Blom started their bakery business in 2000 after visiting the Dells Area and realizing the community no longer had a service for fresh breads, rolls, buns and pastries. Both of them loved the way the community felt and looked. They also have relatives here. Making the move from the Renner area, where Roger owned and operated a construction business and Keri worked in banking, the Bloms settled in Dells and did their research on how to operate a bakery. They visited with the previous bakery owner, Oscar Emly and got a lot of ideas about what to do and how to make the bakery work. "We never even made a loaf of bread before" Keri admitted "and we needed someone to show us how.. We also talked with other people in the community about how to secure the equipment and supplies. Everyone was very helpful. We couldn't have don it without all the support of the community." Roger and Keri now employ 8 people who are as dedicated to the pastry business as they are. "The hours are the worst part of the business." replied Roger, "it cuts into your social life, play time and is backwards from normal working hours." But, the customers and people in the community who support us are the best rewards," said Keri. "We are a special part of building memories to the kids on their bikes, grandparents with their grandchildren who stop in for a donut and conversation. There is a bonding and closeness that builds trust in the community. It feels like family." Holland House Pastries serves businesses, schools, restaurants and grocery stores around the area with buns, donuts, breads and cakes. They also provide special events with cakes and confections decorated for the events. Their business hours are from 4:00am to 5:30pm, Monday through Friday and 4:00am till 4:00pm on Saturdays.
